Stand-up DC & some F'd up Safeway trivia and pics!
I commented on Schiffo's blog this morning, after reading DebSexy's blog comment on his acronym rant - quite funny actually - this early am and it caused me to want to post something to mine...I'm never up so early but Channel7 had to be to work early and I'm using the time wisely to not go to work early like I said - but to clean the kitchen from last night's impromptu dinner party and do some much needed blogging :-)
I am now happily living within the confines of the District of Columbia. I started out here years ago actually while at that snobby school on the hill near the impossible and impassable streets and then lived in not-yet-so-trendy Mt. Pleasant just down the block from the Spanish Safeway... that just got me thinking about something I've taken dorky delight in for years...Ok I am going to go off on a tangent for a second (quelle suprise!!!) if you are not from DC, we have this dorky, yet fun, way of classifying our Safeway grocery stores. And yesterday I mentioned one and actually found a picture of it (G-d bless Google)... Here are a sampling of DC Safeways and their lil silly nicknames:
The Soviet Safeway - known for its tiny location, limited selection and LONG lines that stretch back into the aisles anytime day or night, reminiscent of the long lines and empty shelves of the former Soviet Union - what a country!
The Spanish Safeway - completely bilingual in nature and better if you speak Spanish... which I do and back in those Mt. Pleasant days I was almost always greeted in Spanish before English. It was summer and I was looking tanned and Boricua... selection is ok for a neighbourhood safeway but it was fun shopping in Spanish... I used to buy cards for people's birthday's there just to be funny and weird... My favorites were always the "Mahogany" series in Spanish - since my Dad could easily appreciate them since he doesn't speak Spanish and isn't black... LOL
The Social Safeway - This is the one that started it all for me as a lil innocent Hoya... when I first came to DC with my Dad to meet his best friend who was a longtime DC resident, he explained that if I went to Georgetown I could shop at this very exclusive Safeway called "The Social Safeway." This was apparently the place to see and be seen - a grocery store. Sounded very lame to me at the time and I almost never went there b/c of the trek up from campus, high prices (I had become accustomed to occasionally shopping across the river in Arlington at the Spout Run mini-Giant - back then crossing the river the other way was a real treat but I digress) and oh yes Euro-trash assholes who weren't really shopping (their maids did that) but pushing carts and clogging the aisle while cruising for chicks (gays ain't the only cruisers).
Other Safeway names I love but can't find pictures of are the "UnSafeway - in Northeast by RI Avenue" and the "Not-so-Safeway" which is in SW I believe... I could be wrong so correct me... There are bunch more so check out the Map that some guy made - a nice job but he's gotta put the ghetto safeways on there... may I will take pics for him and get him to update it... this is a part of DC's weirdo culture people! He also mentions the Secret Safeway which is really a Townhouse and those don't exist too much anymore I am told...
Ok now that my tangent is over I am now not going to be early for work at all, haven't touched the dishes and should shower quickly so I'm not late for work! LOL - I hate going there so much and writing longwinded tangents is INFINITELY more fun... but before I go - the original intent of this post was to tell people about a great cause for DC rezzies and those who love them...
I've become involved with the movement for DC Statehood. Please check them out and be sure to sign their petition so people like me can have a vote and voice that counts...
Happy Friday people!
