For the geographically challenged... Alsace (aka Alsace-Lorraine and the provincial capital is the city of Strasbourg) is in the northeast corner of France on the German border. Part of my Mom's family (the non-Polish side) is from there but we're not sure who was in control when the family lived there originally (Alsace has contested for centuries between France and Germany) - I just say I'm part-Alsatian, it usually pisses the Germans off ;-)
