Mayor WIlliams Responds
Thanks to my boy for getting me this:
(Washington, DC) In response to the introduction by Rep. Henry Bonilla (R-TX) of legislation to rename 16th Street, NW as "Ronald Reagan Boulevard," Mayor Williams issued the following statement:
"It's been a long time since I've heard of a plan that made so little sense. Changing the unique and beautifully mapped street system in Washington would mean undoing the work of Pierre L'Enfant who created a design that has inspired millions of people from around the world.
Sixteenth Street is one of our city's most prominent thoroughfares. It represents all presidents - not just one president.
If Congressman Bonilla feels strongly that he'd like to rename more streets and buildings after President Reagan, then I would encourage him to find suitable sites in his south Texas district. I'm sure the people of El Paso and San Antonio would love to see their streets named after Ronald Reagan."
