Gene Shalit: Anti-gay Predator and Mouthpiece for Bigotry

Dear Today,

Gene Shalit's review of Brokeback Mountain was the straw that broke the
camel's back - mine!

I'm sick of your softball approach to appeasing (or should I say pandering)
the small-minded segment of your audience. When it is convenient for your ratings
and your sponsors you have no problem "gaying" it up with Carson, Kyan and other
notable homosexuals. But then the moment passes and it's right back to soft-peddling
bigoted claptrap like Shalit's review of "Brokeback Mountain" - assuredly in the name
of journalistic freedom and integrity.

You have gone too far. I will never watch your show again - even after watching it since 1990!

Gene Shalit's review of Brakeback Mountain was a disgusting pile of
anti-gay trash. It was an insult to gay couples, singles and anyone with feelings gay
or straight.

Shalit has every right as a film critic to criticize Brokeback
Mountain. But his baseless branding of Jack as a "sexual predator" merely
because he is romantically interested in someone of the same sex is
DEFAMATORY, ignorant and irresponsible.

And it is equally irresponsible and REPREHENSIBLE for NBC News to have
given Shalit a platform for his gratuitously offensive comments.

I demand an apology from both Shalit and your network. As a viewer this is simple
unacceptable.

If you think I'm not serious - then think again. I will be contacting
the marketing directors and executive officers of your largest sponsors. Maybe they will do
something if you won't.

Don't underestimate the positive power of GLBT people - Ford almost did and then they
realized the mistake they were making. I suggest you do the same.

Sincerely,

WanderTOS

I did not see this! Was Katie in the backgroud applauding him on?

Movie critic. Gene Shalit. That's a joke in itself!!! We've been saying that the TODAY show has been becoming increasingly conservative. Let's all watch Julie Chen instead!

(BTW if I were to picture you as an animal I think you'd be more on an Ostrich than a camel)

Hi TOS...I did not see this on the Today Show, but it's probably a good thing. I would have been devastated as a loyal Today Show watcher. Guess I'll think twice about that now. I applaud you for your well-written response...it was very well said.

Thanks for sharing this response with us. I may be writing a letter of my own. Take care buddy.
