Relief....... well sortof

Ok so I know it sounds silly but I am feeling a little relieved today... I'm going to the dermatologist in a couple hours. It has taken 2 months of waiting to get an appointment and finally it is here. As many of you know I have a bad skin problem that is largely due to shaving. It gets really bad - even when I stop shaving (hell I even grew a beard for a while) my face erupts (gross) but worst of all, even worse than the cosmetic concerns, my face hurts... It sounds lame but my face is constantly irritated, feeling burnt or I have litte painful welts that look like zits but they aren't... I've seen a couple of dermatologists over the years who I think have misdiagnosed me (dry skin, need to change my shaving habits etc) and the problem seems to be getting worse. I'm pretty sick of feeling and looking like some sort of scratched up teenager or werewolf monster (though with bare patches since my facial hair is weird).

In short, I'm glad to be seeing a derm that comes very highly regarded (and is gay I think). I'm really hoping he can give me some sort of relief or a plan (which is hopefully covered by insurance). So keep your fingers crossed for me - I've been pretty healthy and this is the one thing that really bugs me!

Anyhow sorry for the gross posting but that's what is on my mind at the moment... Besides I turn the big 3-0 next Weds and I wouldn't mind looking halfway decent in some of the photos ;-)

Sounds like PFB. Was that it?

I'd spell it out, but I don't think I can. All that latin... I'm lucky I can pronounce it.

Thank goodness for accronyms.

That's it.

We had to take a class on it during AF Basic Training. Typically, they said, it affected black people because of the curliness of their facial hair, but once in a while white guys. They suggested shaving less, or (since we HAD to shave everyday) and electric razor.

As always, see your doctor if the conditions worsens. I see you got to this stage.

i have psoriasis so i, too, know the joys of skin problems and the forever-long waits for a dermatologist. mine comes and goes. it's currently in a "here and annoying" stage. too bad we just can't take a pill for what ails us!

As someone with a heavy beard myself (it's no coincidence why I've gone as Fred Flintstone for Halloween MANY times) I also have shaving issues. I have dermatitis which makes my skin super red and itchy sometimes. Luckily, I've found that if I use super thick and gooey face creams (Kiehl's for Very Dry skin) it goes away 99% of the time. Also, there are some awesome anti-irritation and anti-redness creams on the market. I use a great one from Phyto which sets me back $50 a pop, but is worth it. All part of getting older. You'll look hot for your 30th so don't worry!!!!
