Spirit Week
This week was "Spirit Week" at school. It culminates tomorrow - day of the Pep Rally. Both Spirit Week and the Pep Rally are foreign concepts to me. I went to an all boys Catholic high school. We had neither of these things. Some day I will write about how strange I find public high school to be - I missed out on some things and am glad I was shielded from others.
Overall I wish we had Spirit Week back at my school. So I overcompensated by being the only teacher in our dept. to participate in the various theme days this week. They were:
1) Monday - "Pajama Day" - In a school where you can't wear a hat, show your navel, wear a tank top or show any cleavage, somehow "pajama day" is ok... riiiiiight, like a bunch of horny teenagers really need to be prancing around in their sleepwear. But I digress... I participated as best as possible (I sleep nekkid - clothes are too constraining to sleep in) so I donned a baseball shirt and athletic pants that are baggy and look pajama-esque. I thought it would be comfortable but actually it was kindof warm and annoying. I prefer jeans anyday.
2) Tuesday - Beach day - This was easy. I used to work at Trader Joe's... so I wore my Hawaiianest swirt and a fake flower lei. The no hat rule x'nayed my signature straw hat...
3) Wacky Tacky Wednesday - This totally backfired on me. I tried to be as Wacky as possible. As a gay I opted to steer clear of tacky. In my attempt to be wacky I wore my green New Balance shoes (that Matty also has) jeans, a Navy Medical Corps uniform shirt and of course a set of duck lips that make a duck call when you blow on them (it scared the crap out of the kids when I blew the duck call without warning! ed note - Thanks Jeremy!)
Sadly (or maybe not) - everybody was totally into my Navy uniform - even the Ass't Principal complimented it and several students asked if they could buy it... Who knew?!
4) Pirate Day - I sadly could not participate since I had class last night and couldn't get to Party City to buy my eye patch. But hey, even our Lord had to rest one day...
5) Blue and Gold Day - Friday - Tomorrow is the pep rally and everyone is supposed to wear blue and gold.
Of course I will be humiliating myself in an attempt to show my immigrant students that it is ok to be different from everyone else (and to make a complete jackass out of myself!)
I'll be spray painting my hair blue one side, gold on the other... Pictures to follow!
Bye for now, and if you name is Topher and you have read this far... I hope it wasn't too boring for you...

it scared the crap out of the kids when I blew them without warning!
That could seriously be taken out of context.

we had spirit week and pep rallies all the time when i was in high school. we didn't have pirate day, though, since pirates weren't en vogue back then. we had hat day, costume day (like halloween), green & gold day, and well, i can't think of the others!
